Chapter 8

sneak attack

To Jedediah and Joshua Willard,

Though we will never submit to your forces, we are willing to negotiate the end of your blockade of the San Fernando Channel. The young man, who is captain to the ship that was able to sneak past your blockade, happens to come from a very well-to-do family in England and is sure to garner a hefty ransom. We will be willing to offer him up in exchange for an appeasement of the blockade you have imposed upon Port Raleigh.

If you are inclined to agree to this proposal, then the matter must be handled delicately. Because the boy’s family has a good reputation back in England, he is beloved by the people here, and they would never allow him to be handed over to pirates. In reality, the boy is corrupt, immoral, and detrimental to the principles of our local government.

Since the townspeople are unaware of this and will defend him to the last, in order to take him you must immediately take the fishing boat that came to deliver this message, enter Port Raleigh harbor, and board the ship that slipped your blockade (now sitting at the pier on the west side of the harbor). For my part of the deal, besides imparting this information, I have ensured that the young captain will be present on the ship as I will set up a meeting with him there for this mid-morning. He is a young man and will likely be in the company of a young woman. Once you have successfully subdued him, you can ease the blockade and deliver a ransom note to the family, who are certain to pay handsomely.

If you refuse this offer, then you cannot say you were not given a chance to retreat with your lives. If you doubt our resolve, then please reference our brilliant fighting from last night. It will only be a matter of time before we take more ships until we will have you hanging from the gallows at the fort.

Amos H. Rose

Governor of His Royal Majesty’s Colony, Port Raleigh
